The Mtkvari (Kura) River

The Bridge of Peace crosses the Mtkvari river, known internationally as the Kura. The river is the reason the bridge exists and the reason its views open up as you walk.

This page looks at the river itself: what you see from the bridge, how the banks differ and how to read the water in different light.

Quick facts

What to notice from the bridge

From the deck you look along the river in both directions. Upstream and downstream the banks show different faces: Old Town rooftops on one side, parkland and modern buildings on the other.

  • Old Town facades on the right bank
  • Rike Park and the cable car on the left bank
  • Metekhi Church and its cliff upstream
  • The fortress hill rising behind the Old Town

How the banks differ

The two banks give different experiences: the Old Town side is historic and dense, while the left bank is more open and modern. Crossing the bridge moves you between them.

River levels, currents and any riverside works change with weather and season. Keep a sensible distance from the water.

Practical points

  • The bridge itself is the best free viewpoint over the river.
  • Morning and evening change the water's colour and reflections.
  • The riverside paths link the bridge with Metekhi and Rike Park.
  • Boat services, where running, are separate and paid.
